Redwood Curtain CopWatch, based in the north coast of California, is part of a larger movement of self organized CopWatch groups throughout the US. Our local efforts seek to intervene in the drastic rise of the presence, militarization, and violence of the police, and build support networks based on self-determination, caring, and concrete needs.

Humboldt District Attorney and Jail Have Regular Practice of Violating Rights
Submitted by copwatch on Sat, 06/18/2011 - 11:30pmMay 20, 2011 Sent Via Email
RE: Mr. Brandon Dyer
To District Attorney of Humboldt County, Paul Gallegos:
This email is a follow-up the message I left on Ms. Shoshani's voice mail at
or about 2:50pm today, May 20, 2011. I am contacting you to, once again,
inform you of the laws that require you to file charges against someone
in the custody of the Humboldt County Correctional Facility (HCCF)
within the statutory time; otherwise or that person's extended custody
due to your failure to bring them in front of a magistrate or judge and
the HCCF's failure to release them, is a misdemeanor and violation of
the person's civil liberties.
Mr. Brandon Dyer was arrested on the night of Wednesday, May 18,
2011. He needs to be brought to court TODAY, Friday May 20, 2011, or be
released from the HCCF. The CA Penal code section 825 (a)(2)
specifically mandates:
Illegal To Share Food In Public? FOOD NOT BOMBS!!! [video]
Submitted by copwatch on Sun, 01/02/2011 - 3:09pmIllegal To Feed Homeless- Man Arrested 2009 [Video]
The "soup wars" continue... If you don't buy it, if you don't sell it- you're a criminal. And not everybody who eats free food is homeless. The State just wants to make sure people who are really hungry and don't have money, can't eat.
In PEOPLE PROJECT, we say "This ain't charity, it's survival!" We know that the only way we'll all make it is through SHARING. Read about Grub-n-Grab's and PEOPLE PROJECT's Good Morning Neighbors Breakfast Program.
There is More to Civil Liberties than Freedom From Arrest
Submitted by copwatch on Sat, 12/18/2010 - 4:15pmArrest, Detention and the G20: There is More to Civil Liberties than Freedom From Arrest Statement by Ombudsman André Marin December 9, 2010
1 Efforts have been made to downplay the questionable use of Regulation 233/10 during the days surrounding the G20 summit in Toronto, on the basis that only two persons were arrested under its authority. The point is being made that almost all of the arrests that took place were made under the power of the police to arrest persons found “breaching the peace.” It is important when considering this information to understand that while there may have been only two arrests using Regulation 233/10, many people were detained, searched, questioned, and redirected under its authority. That regulation played a huge role in the violations of civil liberties that occurred. Arrests were only a small part of it.

Sheriff Deputies in SoHum PHOTOGRAPHING People Eating Free Food
Submitted by copwatch on Mon, 06/14/2010 - 7:55amMonday, June 14th WHILE a caring community member shared sandwiches with up to 100 hungry people in Redway- on the street- engaging in a responsible and constitutionally protected activity- the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Department drove around photographing the people who were eating lunch. This is INTIMIDATION. This is profiling. There is no good reason for it.
People are scared when the Sheriff’s Department behaves this way because the Sheriff targets anyone who lives outside with very few resources. The Sheriff’s Department hunts people down while they are sleeping -out of sight- and Sheriff Deputies attempt to DISAPPEAR people who are, for instance, sitting under a tree for shade.

Want to invoke your right to remain silent? You'll have to speak up.
In a narrowly split decision, the Supreme Court's conservative majority expanded its limits on the famous Miranda rights for criminal suspects on Tuesday – over the dissent of new Justice Sonia Sotomayor, who said the ruling turned Americans' rights of protection from police abuse "upside down."
