Submitted by copwatch on Mon, 09/26/2011 - 8:23pmFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE SEPTEMBER 26, 2011
Eureka Officers Viciously Beat Martin and Left Him to Die in Jail Cell
Eureka, CA: A jury delivered a resounding victory for plaintiffs in a police misconduct civil rights case by awarding the total sum of $4,575,000 against the City of Eureka and Eureka police officers Adam Laird, Justin Winkle, and Gary Whitmer for the death of Martin Cotton II. Punitive damages were assessed against the three officers. Mr. Cotton, a 26 year-old man living on the streets died of blunt force head trauma. The plaintiffs, represented by attorneys Dale K. Galipo and Vicki I. Sarmiento of Los Angeles County, were Mr. Cotton's 5 year-old daughter and his father. The jury found that Officers Laird and Winkle used excessive force, and that all three officers failed to provide medical care.
Sat & Sun (10/1 & 10/2) Show Support for Prisoner Hunger Strike Outside Pelican Bay!
Submitted by copwatch on Fri, 09/30/2011 - 3:42pmCalifornia prisoners are on hunger strike again! The prisoners say that the California Department of Corrections has retaliated against prisoners for participating in the strike and made only nominal policy changes in response to the strike. Prisoners say it is necessary to continue to put pressure on the CDCR to meaningfully change long-term solitary confinement policies and practices. Up to date information can be found at http://prisonerhungerstrikesolidarity.wordpress.com/.

The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation
has been found guilty of constitutional rights violations by federal courts, and its practice of long-term isolation, particularly at Pelican Bay, has been identified by human rights monitors as constituting a form of psychological torture.
The lives of the prisoners who say they are going to participate in the strike are at great risk.

Freezing Weather and Eureka Cops Continue To Terrorize People in the Bush
Sent: Thursday, February 24, 2011 10:21 AM
To: Garr Nielsen
Subject: homeless and freezing weather
Dear Chief Nielsen,
Again I must complain about the work that [Murl] Harpham and Sanchez do out in the bush. Sanchez wielding a machete around homeless people who's only "crime" is poverty and Harpham with his ridiculous "holier than thou" attitude do nothing to bring real safety or respect to this community.
Yesterday these officers walked out to a camp that has been kept clean and without heavy drugs, etc.and told the people there that they must be out by 1pm today or their camp would be destroyed with the machete Sanchez held. Where are
these people to go?
We have freezing weather upon us. There is no plan for sheltering on an emergency basis and the housing plan of this city clearly discriminates against the poor, so more homelessness is on the way. What is the plan to "control" the
larger numbers when the financial meltdown finally hits?
Eureka Cop, Alan Aubuchon, Ignores 215 Recommendations
Submitted by copwatch on Sun, 03/13/2011 - 9:35pmI was arrested by Officer Aubuchon, of the Eureka Police Department. He found my medical pipe and 1/2gram of medical marijuana, that I purchased from a dispensary. Officer Aubuchon then tells me that this is illegal to have drugs or drug paraphernalia. So I then told him that I am a medical marijuana patient, I have my prescription in my back pocket and my state card in my front pocket. He looked at them then laughed. Waiving them in my face he told me haha we here in Eureka do not recognize 215. Several times he informed me that Eureka does not recognize 215. I was then handcuffed arrested and placed in the back of the squad car, then taken to County Jail. That's where I had to post bail. IRONICALLY the Humboldt County Health Department, that handles the California state medical marijuana card, in this region, is located in Eureka. Plus there is one dispensary in Eureka, and currently plans for another. So I hope Officer Aubuchon doesn't sit outside the dispensary and arrest all the patients that leave the medical facility.

ORGANIZING & CONNECTING Around Upcoming Civil Trial in Oakland: Cotton v. Eureka Police and Humboldt Sheriff's
Submitted by copwatch on Sun, 03/13/2011 - 12:20pmThe federal civil trial regarding the deadly beating by police of Eureka homeless resident, Martin Cotton, was postponed (We learned mid-December) . The new date was set for September 12th.
Now there is more time to organize.
We have been getting together with groups and individuals in the Bay area to spread the word about Martin Cotton and the trial. Also, we've been connecting to strategize and talk about how our communities are struggling against police violence. And how we can strengthen our efforts. So far, while the situations we are dealing with are so intense, our encounters in the Bay area have been enriching experiences!

NO CHARGES AGAINST COPWATCHERS AFTER BUNK ARRESTS
“In the interest of justice,” the Humboldt County District Attorney, Paul Gallegos, needs to decline from charging Kimberly Starr and Ray Thompson, of Redwood Curtain CopWatch, with any crimes stemming from their March 15, 2010 arrest. We insist that the DA's office today officially put this case to an end. The arrests of Ms. Starr and Mr. Thompson, while they were engaged in copwatch activities (observing and recording police activity), were warrantless, unjustified, and clear violations of their civil liberties. Now , almost a month later, the DA's office continues to say that the case is “pending.”
Open Letter: EPD's Rodrigo Reyna-Sanchez threatens to kill!
Submitted by copwatch on Wed, 03/24/2010 - 9:31amMarch 23, 2010
Open Letter To Eureka Police Chief Garr Nielsen and all entities listed below:
It is unfortunate that we must write to you again about yet another series of violent incidences, one of many, wherein Eureka Police Officer Rodrigo Reyna-Sanchez is targeting, physically abusing, and threatening the life of a vulnerable Eureka resident. The City's lack of response to any of our prior letters and its failure, to date, to expel dangerous officers such as Sanchez from the police force exhibits your unwillingness to protect the people of Eureka. However, with this explicit notice of severe threats and abuse by Sanchez against a specific person, you have a moral and legal obligation to take whatever actions to prevent further abuse or even murder by Rodrigo Reyna-Sanchez.
